There is a story somewhere in the drug and alcohol fuelled miasma of Joan Didion’s ‘Play it as it Lays.’ Overarching, subtle and wonderfully complex, the story achieves a rare depth against the backdrop of a shallow society as Maria struggles to navigate Hollywood in the 60s.
Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include:
“Play it as it Lays” by Emily Bronte
“Northanger Abbey” by Jane Austen
The Paris Review – An interview with Rita Dove

Emily Bronte is the literary thorn in my side. Wuthering Heights withered on the page for me, but her language and writing style sparkled and today, one of the jewels from her arsenal of poetry. Plead for Me, explores the spiralling nature when decisions you make for the better, start to fall apart and make you question yourself.
Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include:
“Plead for Me” by Emily Bronte
“Brother of a More Famous Jack” by Barbra Trapido

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry childish classic, The Little Prince, is much more than a fun children's story. Combining personal suffering with philosophical beliefs, this is a novella that one can come back too, time and time again and still unearth small intimate details that feed into the larger story.
Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include:
“The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
“As I Lay Dying” by William Faulkner

Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” took the world by a storm. It was published in 2006, won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 2007 and was a film by 2009, and yet, not to sound like a broken record or a lover of literature, the book is unmatched. McCarthy’s brutal and heartbreaking story, is as vivid and as shattering on the page, as any film adaptation could hop to achieve.
Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include:
“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy
“Lady Chatterley’s Lover” by D.H. Lawrence
